Process of becoming a cricket umpire 

Initial registration

To become an umpire, first of all you have to register with your respective State Cricket Association. This is the first step where you have to gain experience of umpiring matches at the local level.

Experience in local matches

You have to umpire in some matches at the local level to gain experience in this field. This experience will help to push your name forward and become eligible for BCCI.

Enrollment for BCCI Exam

Once you have gained enough experience with the state association, your name will be sent for the Level 1 exam conducted by the BCCI.

Coaching and Written Test

The BCCI conducts three days of coaching classes followed by a written test on the fourth day. Candidates who pass this test are shortlisted.

Induction Course

The shortlisted candidates are called for an induction course in which information is given on the rules of the game and other important topics.

Practical and Oral Test

After the induction course, candidates have to give practical and oral tests. After clearing these exams, you are eligible for the Level 2 exam.

Medical Test

After passing the Level 2 exam, candidates have to give a medical test to check physical fitness.

Final Recognition

When you successfully pass all the tests and procedures, you get recognized as an umpire by the BCCI and you can conduct matches at various levels.

Salary of cricket umpire

The salary of the umpire depends on their grade, experience and seniority. According to reports:

A+ and A grade umpires get around ₹40,000 per day for domestic matches.

B and C grade umpires get around ₹30,000 per day.

If the umpire has a good track record, he can be included in the ICC panel. ICC Elite Panel umpires get ₹1.50 to ₹2.20 lakh per match. Their annual salary can be more than ₹75 lakh.

Umpire Salary (for different matches)

ODI Matches: 2,500 to 3,000 US Dollars (approximately ₹2 to ₹2.5 lakhs)

Test Matches: ₹3,77,567 per match

T20 Matches: ₹1,13,270 per match

Umpires also have the opportunity to earn well through sponsorships.
