MBBS Abroad: Necessary Rules for Studying Abroad, Otherwise Practice in India may be Stopped

If you are planning to do MBBS from abroad, then it is mandatory for you to follow the guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Recently NMC has issued an advisory, which makes it clear that if you do not follow the standards, it may be impossible to get registration of medical practice in India.

NMC Guidelines: Keep these things in mind before studying

Follow FMGL Regulations, 2021

Foreign medical institutions are required to follow the FMGL (Foreign Medical Graduate Licensing) Regulations, 2021.

If the institutes do not follow these standards, then your degree will not be valid in India.

Choose the college or university carefully

Before admission, ensure that your selected institute complies with the FMGL guidelines.

If these conditions are not met, you will not be able to register for medical practice.

Conditions required for practising in India

Course duration and structure:

Course duration:

A medical course of 54 months (4.5 years) is required.

This should be followed by a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution.

Overall duration:

The total duration of the course and internship should be completed within 10 years.

Medium of instruction:

The medium of instruction for the foreign medical degree should be English language.

Equivalence of curriculum:

The foreign curriculum should be at par with the MBBS curriculum of India.

It should include subjects like general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology.

Clinical training:

Practical and clinical training is required during the course.

On returning to India, a 12-month supervised internship has to be completed.

Recognition of degree:

Your degree should be recognised by the regulatory body of that country.

Also, you should have the right to practise medicine like the citizens of that country.

National Exit Test (NEXT):

For permanent registration in India, you have to clear NEXT or any other mandatory exam.

Key precautions:

Verification:

Check the recognition, curriculum and internship of the foreign college.

Documentation:

Get the degree and other certificates duly verified.

Possible alternative:

Choose a good medical college in India instead of foreign institutions, if the rules seem complicated.

Who will be responsible in case of disqualification?

NMC has clarified that if a student does not follow the guidelines and proves disqualified, then the entire responsibility will be of the student.

Conclusion

Pursuing MBBS abroad can be a good option, but it is important to strictly follow the guidelines of NMC while planning it. Choosing the right college, recognition of the course and preparation for the required examinations are the keys to your success.

Remember: Before fulfilling the dream of studying abroad, take steps only after knowing the rules, so that there is no obstacle in the future.
